Russell S. Jonas
June 17, 1903 - Nov. 16, 2001
Russell S. Jonas of Westminster Village, Indianapolis, a long-time South Bend resident, passed away quietly during the evening on November 16, 2001. He was 98 years old. Mr. Jonas was born in LaPorte County, Indiana, on June 17, 1903 to Frank and Mamie (Schultz) Jonas. He grew up in South Bend and Attended South Bend Central High School.
In 1923, he married Louise Cook in South Bend. Together, they had two children before she passed away in 1947. In 1956, Mr. Jonas married Geneva Heaton in South Bend. She preceded him in death also, passing away in 1983.
Mr. Jonas had many professional interest, working as a singer on the radio in the 1920s, a tool and die maker for Studebaker and Bendix, and for a number of years as the proprietor of the Karmel Korn Shop in downtown South Bend. He continued to made fudge and sing Irish folk songs well after he turned ninety. He was a member of the Scottish Rite. St. Joseph Lodge No. 45 F&A.M., and a former member of Sunnyside Presbyterian Church.
Mr. Jonas is survived by his two children, Robert W. (Virginia) Jonas of Indianapolis and Lois Dahlquist (Bill Masterson) of Joliet, Illinois. Also surviving are seven grandchildren, Kay Dahlquist (Tom Carroll) of Naperville, Illinois, Craig (Tricia) Dahlquist of Peoria, Illinois, Mark Dahlquist of Elmhurst, Illinois, Mary (Kevin McCarty) of New Palestine, Indiana, R. William (Kathleen) Jonas, Jr. of South Bend, Thomas B. (Kim) Jonas of Three Rivers, Michigan and Shirley (Bruce) Rueter of Hagerstown, Indiana. Mr. Jonas also had seventeen great-grandchildren.
Visitation will take place from 1 to 2 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 20, at the Hickey Funeral Home at 17131 Cleveland Road, followed by services at 2 p.m. in the funeral home. Interment will follow at St. Joseph Valley Memorial Park in Granger, Indiana. Memorials may be made to the charity of the donor's choice
