E. Blair Warner

E. Blair Warner, 90, of South Bend, died following a lengthy illness at 2:20 p.m. Wednesday, June 14, in Crestwood of Tanglewood Trace. Mr.Warner was born December 10, 1915, in South Bend, to the late Eugene B. and Merle (Shidler) Warner, and was a lifetime area resident.
On April 23, 1949, in South Bend, he married Jane F. Johnston, who survives.Also surviving are a daughter, Katherine W.(Timothy) Fulnecky of Mishawka, Ind.; three sons, James B. (Christine) Warner of Winter Springs, Fla., John A.(Leslie) Warner of Scottsdale, Ariz., and Arthur S.Warner of Granger, Ind.;11 grandchildren, Katherine, Scott Elizabeth, Blair, Timothy and Barbara Fulnecky, and Kimberly, Robert, Melissa, Cameron and David Warner;a great-grandson, Timothy Warner;and his sister, Barbara K. Warner of South Bend.
Mr.Warner attended the old Madison Elementary School and Central High School. He graduated from the Phillips Exeter Academy, Exeter, New Hampshire, in 1934, and Dartmouth College, Hanover, New Hampshire, in 1938. He received the degree of “Master of Commercial Science” (MCS) in 1939 from the Amos Tuck School of Business Administration and Finance (Dartmouth College).At Dartmouth he was a member of Beta Theta Pi and Phi Beta Kappa. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II and Korea in the finance department. He was engaged in business in South Bend beginning in 1946, with offices in the J.M.S.building.
He was the longest serving member of the board of directors of the First Bank and Trust Company of South Bend (1st Source Bank), serving from 1957 to 1989. He was a member of Portage Lodge #675 F&A.M. and Scottish Rite Valley of South Bend.He was also a member of First Presbyterian Church of South Bend, where he served as ruling elder and past president of the board of trustees.Among his many civic involvements, he was a past director and vice president of the National Association for Mental Health;director, member of the Executive Committee, and past president of the Mental Health Association in Indiana;past president of Memorial Hospital of South Bend;former vice president of the Community Foundation of St.Joseph County;a director and treasurer of the Cancer Society of St. Joseph County;a trustee, member of the Executive Committee and past president of the Stanley Clark School;a director and past president of the Industrial Foundation Inc., in South Bend;a member and past director and treasurer of the Chamber of Commerce of South Bend/Mishawaka;a past president of the United Way of St.Joseph County;and a past director of the Northern Indiana Historical Society.He received the Distinguished Service Award (Young Man of the Year) from the South Bend Junior Chamber of Commerce in 1950;the Protestant Brotherhood Award from the National Conference of Christians and Jews in 1968; and was appointed a Sagamore of the Wabash by Governor Robert Orr in 1982.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m.Saturday, June 17, in First Presbyterian Church, with Rev.David Morrow officiating.Burial will follow at Riverview Cemetery.Friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m.today, June 16, in the Welsheimer Family Funeral Home North, 17033 Cleveland Road.
