Michael B. Brien, 89, of South Bend, Indiana passed away on Tuesday, May 14, 2024, surrounded by his family. He was born and raised in South Bend, Indiana to the late Willard and Katherine (Stoney) Brien on April 21, 1935. Michael is survived by his children, James Michael Brien of South Bend, Indiana, Patricia Marie Brien of South Bend, Indiana and David William (Nelle) Brien of Carmel, Indiana, 5 grandchildren, Mary Elizabeth and Rebecca Johanna, of Carmel, Indiana, Amber Marie (Kevin) of Fishers, Indiana, Cleopatra Catherine, of Westfield, Indiana, John Taylor, of Indianapolis, Indiana, and great grandchildren Charley Marie and Lucy June of Fishers, Indiana, brother James T (Kathryn) Brien, of South Bend, Indiana, sisters in Law, Marge Brien, of San Antonio, Texas and Marie Brien, of Peoria, Illinois and many nieces, nephews and friends.

Michael is preceded in death by his loving wife of 57 years Mary Jo (Shew) Brien, brothers, William Brien and John Patrick Brien, sisters, Mary Ellen Brien and Katherine Stoepler, brothers-in-law, John Stoepler, Nicholas Patton, sister-in-law, Nancy Page, and Nephew, Kevin Brien.

Michael was born and raised in South Bend, Indiana. He attended South Bend Central High School. He was a proud veteran who served in the US Army from 1956-1959. He married Mary Jo Shew on December 21, 1963, and they had three children. Michael was a lifelong parishioner of Holy Cross Parish and was devoted to his Catholic faith. Michael was a proud member of the UAW as a pipefitter, retiring from Bendix/Allied Signal (Honeywell) in June 1997 after 25+ years and an honored member of the Knights of Columbus. Michael was proud of his Irish heritage and was a devoted fan of the University of Notre Dame, the Chicago Cubs and the Chicago Bears. He enjoyed golf, bowling, chess, cribbage, euchre and bridge, to name a few. He had a gift of gab, always a joke to tell and was never without a smile on his face. He brought laughter to the people around him, never knowing a stranger. He was a dedicated husband and father and will be greatly missed.

On Monday, May 20, 2024, A rosary will be prayed at 4pm followed by visitation until 8pm at Kaneiwski Funeral Home, 3545 N Bendix Drive, South Bend, Indiana. A Mass of Christian Burial will take place at 10am on Tuesday, May 21, 2024, at Holy Cross Catholic Church, 1050 Wilber St, South Bend, Indiana. Interment will follow at Highland Cemetery, 2257 Portage Avenue, South Bend, Indiana.
