He was the beloved son of the late James Johnson and Eurla (Hicks) Johnson. His journey led him to South Bend, Indiana, where he met and married the love of his life, Hattie (Riley) Johnson, on his birthday in 2006. Together, they shared a life full of love and companionship.

A devoted father, Herbert's legacy lives on through his children: Karla Johnson of Anderson, Indiana; Andrea Lewis of South Bend; Herbert Johnson Sr. and his wife Monique of Kokomo, Indiana; and Charles Johnson and his wife Porscha of Indiana. He was a loving brother to his sisters, Toyna (Tyrone) Robinson and Alma Wynn. His life was further enriched by the joy of his many grandchildren, including his special granddaughter, Jordyn Hill, as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Herbert was preceded in death by his brother, Terry Johnson, whose memory he held close to his heart.

Herb was a proud graduate of Central High School in South Bend. After completing his education, he dedicated many years of service to the Logan Center, working in the maintenance department until his well-deserved retirement. His colleagues remember him as a hardworking and reliable individual who brought warmth and humor to every task he undertook.

An avid Notre Dame fan, Herbert's passion for sports was unparalleled. He relished the thrill of watching Notre Dame football games and cheering on his favorite team. His enthusiasm for sports extended to all sporting events, a testament to his love for the game, no matter who was playing.

Fishing was more than a hobby for Herb; it was a peaceful retreat that allowed him to connect with nature and enjoy quiet moments of reflection. His friends and family often accompanied him on these tranquil outings, creating memories that they will cherish forever.

Herbert's infectious laughter and spirited personality made him quite the character among his loved ones. He was the heart of family gatherings, where his stories and jokes would echo through the room, leaving a trail of smiles in their wake. His presence was a source of comfort and happiness, and his absence will be deeply felt by all who had the pleasure of knowing him.

The family would like to give a special thanks to Emma Owens and Pamela and Jimmy Jackson for always being by his side, and thank you to Aljerome, Corey, Greg and Jeremy for always being there for him no matter what. He really enjoyed spending time with you all.
