SOUTH BEND - Norman Jacob Schmid, 90, of South Bend, IN, passed away Wednesday morning, August 29, 2012 in his home. He was born on October 20, 1921 in Chicago, IL to Hugo and Laura (Malstrom) Schmid. On May 17, 1958 in the United Church in Cassopolis, MI, he married the former Sylvia Reames. They celebrated fifty-four years of marriage in May.

Mr. Schmid is survived by his wife, Sylvia Schmid; daughter, Shari (Philip) Coulis of Munster, IN; son, Mark Schmid of Mishawaka, IN; three grandchildren, Steven (Christina) Coulis of New York City, NY, Andrea Coulis of San Jose, CA and Loren Schmid of Elkhart, IN, and sister, Joan (Kenneth) Hartman of Chicago, IL.

He was preceded in death by his brother, Jack Schmid. Mr. Schmid graduated from Amundsen High School in Chicago. While working in the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) in Minnesota, he was called to active duty and hitchhiked home to report for duty. He served honorably in the United States Army during World War II, serving in Patton's 3rd Army.

He attended Austin Junior College in Austin, Minnesota, graduated from Michigan State University, and earned his master's degree in education at Indiana University. Mr. Schmid boxed in the Midwest Golden Gloves competition, in college and in the army. He began his career at Skokie, Illinois. He coached at Romeo, Michigan and Richmond, Michigan before moving to Cassopolis, Michigan. There he coached three winning football seasons, with only one tie and one loss.

He was a physical education teacher and coach in the South Bend Community School Corporation at several schools: Greene, North Liberty, Central High School and Jackson Middle School. He coached football, basketball, wrestling, swimming, golf and tennis.

He was the director of the South Bend Parks Department summer tennis program for a number of years. Mr. Schmid was also a ranger at Eberhart Golf Course. He was a tap dancer, the only man in the class, at Flint Dance Studio. He was a member of the Masonic Loyal Lodge #1007 in Chicago. He loved his cats very much. Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m. Saturday, September 1, 2012 in the Palmer Funeral Home-Guisinger Chapel, 3718 S. Michigan St., South Bend. Graveside services and burial will follow in Southlawn Cemetery, South Bend. The family will receive friends from 4:00-8:00 p.m. Friday in the funeral home and two hours prior to the services Saturday . Contributions in memory of Norman J.
