JIMMIE D. POINDEXTER

SOUTH BEND - Jimmie Dell Poindexter passed away at 2:50 a.m. on Thursday, November 3, 2011, at Memorial Hospital, South Bend. He was 69 years old. He was born February 28, 1942, in South Bend Indiana, to Lovie McNary and Alonzo Poindexter Sr. Jimmie was a lifelong area resident and was a graduate of Central High School.

Following graduation, he enlisted into the U.S. Army and served a tour of duty in Vietnam. He returned to South Bend following his military discharge and was employed by the City of South Bend Streets and Sanitation Dept. for 20 years. He also worked for Asphalt Engineering for seven years.

Surviving to cherish his memory are his son, Darnell Lamarr Poindexter; brothers, Alonzo, David, Michael, Kelvin Poindexter, and David Coleman (Memphis, TN). Sisters, Delores Chambliss, Shelia Taylor of Arizona, Judy Harvey of Los Angeles and Jacki Harvey of South Bend also survive him along with his dear friend, Lula Jenkins, a dear cousin, Shirley Thomas, and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Jimmie was preceded in death by his mother, father and stepmother, Catherine Armstrong-Poindexter, as well as two sister and four brothers.

The funeral service will be held on Friday, November 11, at 12 noon, with visitation one hour before the service in Cobb Funeral Home, 3525 S. Michigan St. Burial will follow at National Cemetery, Marion, IN.
