SOUTH BEND - Daniel Lee Miller, 79, passed away amidst close friends and family at 5:35 p.m. on Wednesday, January 4, 2012, at the St. Joseph Regional Medical Center, Mishawaka. Mr. Miller was born on December 6, 1932, in South Bend, to the late Robert and Edna "Loraine" (Billman) Miller. He had remained a lifelong resident of South Bend.

On May 2, 1964, in South Bend, he married Carolyn A. Dundore. Carolyn preceded him in death on October 8, 1984. Mr. Miller is survived by his son, Mark (Cheryl) Miller of Hinton, WVa; daughter, Jamesen Miller of Granger; three grandchildren, Alexandra Miller, Brett Miller and Danielle Riley; sister, Nancy L. Schenkel of Indianapolis, IN; and his brother, Robert D. Miller of Burbank, CA. Dan was loved by many and respected by many more for his generosity, his musical talent, his spirit of excellence, and his commitment and loyalty to those he loved.

Dan taught choral music for 40-plus years in South Bend Community Schools beginning at South Bend Central, moving on to South Bend Jackson, and ending his teaching career at Riley High School. His excellence in the musical development and performance of high school students was highly regarded, well-respected, and has been fondly remembered to this day.

Dan was also an excellent competitor in fast pitch softball leagues, and many will remember his speed, accuracy and consistency as a premier pitcher in those leagues. Toward the end of his tenure at Riley High School, and on into retirement, Dan was "the voice" of Riley's swimming programs and, once again, remembered for his spirit of excellence, work ethic, and devotion to his friends and colleagues.

Dan was a patriarchal member of Gloria Dei Lutheran Church all of his adult life, serving as choir director and church treasurer with the highest degree of excellence and integrity. Through everything Dan did in life, his faith in God and in Jesus Christ was constant and at the core of his actions. Dan graduated from Wittenberg University in Springfield, OH, and was a member of the Lambda Chi Alpha Fraternity. He was also a member of the Retired Teachers Association.

Dan received his Master's Degree in Education from the University of Notre Dame and served his country with the United States Army during the Korean War.

A celebration of Dan's life will be held on Saturday, January 14, 2012, at 1:00 p.m. at Gloria Dei Lutheran Church, 225 E. Haney, South Bend, IN 46613. Rev. Jeff Zell, pastor, will officiate.
