SOUTH BEND - John Vladimir Kacarab, 95, born May 22, 1917. Passed into Eternal Rest October 1, 2012, the Solemn Feast day of the Protection of the Holy Mother of God.

John is survived by his wife of 68 years, Daisy Kate (Atwood). He is also survived by all of seven of his children: daughters, Barb (John) Fishell of Riverside, CA, Mary Kacarab of Mishawaka, Elizabeth Kacarab of South Bend and Anne (Joe) Oliva of Osceola; sons, John (Julie) Kacarab of Riverside, CA, Gregory (Tammy) Kacarab of Granger and Nicholas (Mary) Kacarab of Elkhart, IN. Grandchildren, Gabriel and Mary Kacarab-Fishell, Riverside, CA, Marie, Catherine and Sarah Oliva of Osceola, IN, Katie, Megan, Michael and Mathew Kacarab of Riverside, CA, Caleb and Christopher Kacarab of Miami and Tampa, FL, Colleen and Claire Kacarab of Elkhart, IN. Also by his sister, Helen Kacarab of Alliance, OH, and brother, Frank (Jean) Kacarab of Canton, OH.

Pre-deceased by his sisters, Annie Kacarab and Mary (Kacarab) Bench, brothers, Mike, George and Charles Kacarab. John was born in Johnstown, PA, to Michael and Helen Kacarab. He was the oldest of 8 children.

He grew up in Alliance, OH, and was a graduate of Mount Union College where he received a BS in Physics. He was a lieutenant and pilot in the Army Air Corps during WW II. He met and married the love of his life, Kate, while he was stationed in Georgia. They spent the first years of marriage in Alliance, OH, until he built his own trailer and moved his young family to South Bend, IN, where he received his Master's Degree in Geology from the University of Notre Dame.

John worked at Bendix and at Bauer Soft Water Company and started his teaching career at Central High School in South Bend in 1960. He retired from teaching from Clay Intermediate in March 1991.

John was a longtime member of Christ the King Catholic Church in South Bend when his children were young, and was an active member of his beloved parish, St. Michael's Ukrainian Byzantine Catholic Church in Mishawaka, and was devoted to the Rosary. John loved the outdoors, especially the mountains where he took his family on numerous camping retreats. His favorite hobby was photography.

Funeral services will be held 11:00 a.m. Friday, October 5, 2012, in Saint Michael Byzantine Catholic Church, 712 E. Lawrence St., Mishawaka. Committal services with military honors will follow at St. Joseph Valley Memorial Park, Granger. Friends may visit with the family from 3:00 till 7:00 p.m. Thursday, October 4th, with a Panachyda (memorial service for the deceased) at 7:00 PM at Welsheimer Family Funeral Home North, 17033 Cleveland Road.
