WILLIAM H. DYER

Jan. 7, 1932 - May 3, 2008
SOUTH BEND - Mr. William H. Dyer, 76, passed away after a courageous battle with cancer at 5 p.m. on Saturday, May 3, 2008. William was born on January 7, 1932, in Marion, Indiana, to Helen and Dewey Dyer, who preceded him in death.

He graduated from Central High School and was a member of the National Guard for eight years.

He received training in electrical and mechanical engineering as well as tool-and-die. He served his community for 24 years on the South Bend Fire Department, was the owner of Wilco Tool and Die, and was founder/co-owner of the Indiana Alarm Company. He spent the last three years working at K-Mold Engineering with some very dear friends.

On October 20, 1951, he married Dorothy G. Szweda, who survives. They were married at St. Casimir's Church. Mr. Dyer is survived by a son, Randall J. (Gabriella) Dyer of South Bend and two daughters, Denice M. (Dennis) Wasikowski of Granger and Danielle A. Dyer of South Bend. He also is survived by six grandchildren, Heather, Kristin and Tara Wasikowski of Granger, and Sgt. Matthew Dyer, Tinker Air Force base in Oklahoma, Michael Dyer and Michael Szemethy of South Bend.

Visitation was from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday, May 6th, in the McGann Hay Funerals | Cremations | Gatherings, Granger Chapel, 13260 State Road 23 (enter off of Cherry Road), where a Rosary was prayed. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 9:30 a.m. today, May 7th, in the Basilica of the Sacred Heart, Notre Dame, IN. Interment will follow at St. Joseph Valley Memorial Park. He was a member of both the Basilica of the Sacred Heart Church on the campus of the University of Notre Dame and St. Pius X Church.

He was also a member of the Knights of Columbus and the Moose Lodge #599, Elkhart. William was an antique car historian. He loved attending antique car shows, working in the yard and spending time with his family. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the William H. Dyer Mesothelioma Foundation for Firefighters at the South Bend Firefighters Federal Credit Union.
