JOHN E. DAVIES

Sept. 27, 1947 - June 26, 2007
SOUTH BEND - John Ellis Davies, 59, of South Bend, died following a sudden illness at 7:25 a.m. Tuesday, June 26, in the Ironwood Health and Rehabilitation Center. Mr. Davies was born in South Bend on September 27, 1947, to the late William Owen Davies III and Joan Lee Ellis Davies, who survives of South Bend. Surviving along with John's mother is a sister, Mary Davies (Gordon) Will of Dallas, TX, and a brother, James M. Davies of Newport, RI.

Along with his father a brother, William L. Davies, preceded him in death as well as his maternal grandparents, Mary and Albert L. Ellis, and paternal grandparents, Esther and William O. Davies Jr.

John attended St. Joseph Preparatory Academy in Bardstown, KY, and graduated from the former South Bend Central High School.

After graduation he joined the U.S. Navy and served two terms in Vietnam aboard the SS Crockett. John was a former member of Sacred Heart Parish, Notre Dame. He was employed by United Beverage.

A memorial service to celebrate John's life will be held at 1 p.m. Friday, June 29, in McGann Hay Funerals/Cremations/Gatherings, Granger Chapel, 13260 SR 23, enter off Cherry Road, with Rev. John Patrick Riley, CSC, pastor, officiating. Friends may call from 4 to 7 p.m. today, June 28, in the Granger Chapel. To send condolences or get directions, log on to www.McGannHay.com.

Being a great sports enthusiast, he partook of most everything that was available, particularly at Camp Eberhart and Diamond Lake where he sailed, water-skied and played golf. Many hours as a child were spent at the South Bend Country Club where he caddied as well as played. John was fortunate to have had so many loyal and devoted friends with whom he enjoyed his weekly golf outings. As a result it would seem appropriate that the family request donations be made in his memory to the Evans Caddy Scholarship Fund, c/o Bob Lee, 205 W. Jefferson Blvd., South Bend, IN 46601; or to the Christ Child Society, P.O. Box 1286, South Bend, IN 46624.
