RICHARD BARNHART

EDWARDSBURG - Richard E. Barnhart, 83 years old, of Eagle Lake, Edwardsburg, MI, passed to his rest Dec. 7, 2012, at Riveridge Manor of Niles after an illness. He was born June 26, 1929, in South Bend, the son of Richard Eugene and Helen Celia (Gadacz) Barnhart.

He graduated from the old Central High School in South Bend, and then entered into the U.S. Army in 1951 where he served during the Korean War in Japan and received three bronze service stars.

In 1967, Richard married Virginia M. (Peters) Patzer in Edwardsburg, by the late Rev. Ogle. Virginia passed to her rest on October 25, 2012.

Surviving are his children, Daniel Barnhart, David (Rebecca) Barnhart and Lynette Stutzman, all of South Bend; and his step-children, Denise (Mark Anthony) Patzer-Taylor of Jamaica, Ronald (Kathy) Patzer of Niles and Edward (Patty) Patzer of Edwardsburg. He has 14 grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren and 2 great-great-grandchildren. There are two siblings, Henrietta (James) Ewing and Edward (Jasmine) Barnhart, all of Colorado.

Family who preceded him in death are his wife, his parents, a son, Andrew Barnhart, two grandchildren, Daniel Barnhart Jr. and Stacy Lannon, along with his first wife, Jean Marie Kifowit.

Richard retired as a supervisor at the former Bendix in South Bend in the brake division. He was an avid golfer playing as a hobby and for the fun of golfing. He was a member of Four Lakes Country Club, Edwardsburg, and Bowlers Country Club in South Bend. In his younger years, he played competitive pool. He enjoyed being an usher for the Notre Dame games for many years. While in the Army, he played football. He was also a member of the Edwardsburg Presbyterian Church.

Friends and family may gather on Sunday, December 16, 2012, from 5-7 PM at the Paul E. Mayhew Funeral Home, 26863 West Main (US-12) in Edwardsburg. The funeral service of remembrance will be Monday, December 17, 2012, at 11:00 AM In the Edwardsburg Presbyterian Church, where family and friends may gather for one hour before. Officiating will be Rev. Scott Scheel, pastor of the church. Burial will follow at Mission Hills Memorial Gardens on M-51 north of Niles. The United States Army Honor Guard will meet at the cemetery and render the Military Honors of playing TAPS and folding the American flag. Memorial donations may be given to the Edwardsburg Presbyterian Church, P.O. Box 4, Edwardsburg, MI 49112-0004. Arrangements are by the Paul E. Mayhew Funeral Home, Edwardsburg, MI.
