FLOYD KUZAN

Floyd J. Kuzan May 18, 1922 - May 24, 2014 MISHAWAKA - Floyd J. Kuzan, age 92, passed away Sunday, May 25, 2014, at Golden Living Center in Mishawaka. Floyd was born May 18, 1922, in Crown Point, Indiana, to the late Sanders and Rose (Jankovisky) Kuzmanovich.

Floyd was called to serve his country as a Marine during WW II, and was discharged honorably in 1946. During his inactive duty, Floyd was called again to serve at the beginning of the Korean War, from 1949-1950.

On September 13, 1947, he married Helen Nagy in Mishawaka. They celebrated 66 years of marriage. Helen survives along with their son, Patrick Kuzan of Osceola.

Floyd was preceded in death by his son, Mark Alan Kuzan in 1961, and by his siblings, Joseph Kuzmanovich and Gladys Fidler.

Visitation will be held from 4-8 pm Thursday, May 29, 2014, at Chapel Hill Funeral Home, and one hour prior to the funeral service which will be held at 10:30 am Friday, May 30, 2014, at Queen of Peace Catholic Church. Interment will follow at Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens, Osceola.

Floyd was a graduate of Mishawaka High School, and went on to receive his Bachelor's degree in education from Indiana University. He furthered his education at the University of Notre Dame, where he obtained his Master's Degree in education. He taught Social Studies, Art, and Commercial Art for 35 years with Jackson High School, Central High School and the Central Career Center through South Bend Community Schools before retiring in 1984. Floyd also was the recipient of the Teacher of the Year award from NewsCenter 16 in 2006.

He also used his artistic talent as the owner of Kuzan Artcraft Signs and Designs, where he did freehand lettering of many area businesses' signs and vehicles. His hobbies include sailing, music, especially the Big Band Era, planting flowers and gardening, and Amateur HAM radio. Floyd also loved collecting and restoring classic cars and bicycles. His favorite vehicle was his 1953 Chevy pickup, which he restored and won 1st place with at the Cavalcade of Wheels. In his spare time, he loved to watch IU and Notre Dame basketball and football, and loved to share his passion for art by drawing on papers or napkins wherever he went. The Kuzan family would like to express their gratitude and thank the staff and volunteers at Hospice House and Golden Living Center who took such excellent care of him in his final weeks.
