Delbert E. Underly
In failing health for the past couple of years, Delbert E. Underly, 77, of Martinsville, died at 5;15 p.m. Aug. 27, 2000, at his residence. He had spent most of his life in Martinsville. Born Nov. 14, 1922, in South Bend, he was the son of Louis and Bessie (Sears) Underly, both deceased. He married Helen M. Granholt July 31, 1965. She survives.
Underly graduated from South Bend Central High School with the class of 1940.
He had worked for 20 years at the Bloomington Herald limes. He re-tired in 1987. Prior to that he was employed seven years at Logansport Press and 10 years at The Martinsville Daily Reporter. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Martinsville, a past member of the American legion Post 230, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1257 and Elks Lodge 1349.
He was past commander of the Indiana National Guard Post at Martinsville. He was a member of the Black Hawk 86th Infantry in the U.S Army, where he attained the rank of T-Sgt. He served from Jan. 29, 1943, to Jan. 26, 1946, during World War II.
Other survivors include two sons, Stephen Eric Underly of Carmichael, Calif., and Edward Lee Underly of Grand Ronde, Ore.; one daughter, Jane Frankenberger of Murrieta. Ga.; one stepdaughter, Cathie Renkenberger of Indianapolis; one brother, Louis Underly Jr. of Michigan: two sisters, Helen Custard and Alta Dominiack, both of Michigan; and 12 grandchildren. Three brothers, Joseph, Otto and Herbert Underly; and one sister, Fritzi McKinney, preceded him in death. The graveside service and burial will be 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at New South Park Cemetery. The Rev. Vey Kidney will officiate. There are no calling hours. Arrangements by Neal & Summers Mortuary. Military graveside rites will be conducted by the American Legion. Veterans of Foreign Wars and Sons of the American Legion. Memorial contributions may be made to Odyssey Healthcare, 8765 Guion Road, Suite G., Indianapolis, IN 46268.

03/01/2025 Update from Jane Underly Frankenberger: JFC
There is some important information missing on Delbert’s post. I am his daughter and there was no mention of my mother Emilee Ruth Brasier Underly whom he was married to for 21 years. They did divorce but to leave her out was very unfair. Especially since Helen who was my mothers best friend broke up my parents marriage.
