SOUTH BEND - Joseph W. Basker, 71, of South Bend, Indiana, passed away on Sunday, December 21, 2014, in his home.
Joseph was born on January 19, 1943, in Fort Stewart, Georgia, to Eugene and Hazel (Condley) Basker. He retired from the City of South Bend, where he was employed with the Park's Department. He had also been employed with the Bureau of Sanitation, was a Bartender at the former Rick's Time Out, and held multiple other jobs.
He is survived by his mother, Hazel F. Basker of South Bend, Indiana; three sisters, Mary (Bob) Wilson of South Bend, Indiana, Annie (Tom) Ferrettie of Edwardsburg, Michigan, and Kim Basker of South Bend, Indiana; six brothers, Gene (Peggy) Basker of South Bend, Indiana, John (Meg) Basker of Mishawaka, Indiana, Tim (Kim) Basker of South Bend, Indiana, Tom Basker of Mishawaka, Indiana, Chris (Elaine Webb) Basker of South Bend, Indiana, and Dan (Jane) Basker of South Bend, IN; and by many nieces and nephews, and great-nieces and great-nephews. Joseph was preceded in death by his father, Eugene Basker; and two brothers, George and Jim Basker.
A Catholic Funeral Service will be held at 10:00 a.m. Saturday, December 27, 2014, in the Kaniewski Funeral Home, 3545 N. Bendix Drive. Burial will follow at Southlawn Cemetery. A visitation will be held from 2 until 8 p.m. Friday in the funeral home.
Joseph was a graduate of South Bend Central High School where he was a member of the football and baseball teams. He served in the Army Reserves and was a volunteer for Christmas in April. Joseph was the founding member of the Basker Bears Flag Football Team. He was a Yankees, Bears, and Notre Dame fan. He enjoyed golfing and playing cards. He was a big influence in the lives of his brothers, sisters, nieces and nephews, and avidly attended their sporting events.
