SERVICES SET FOR MOOMAW
Ex-Building Chief Succumbs at Age 84
Services for Dalton Moomaw, 1121 Blaine Ave., city building commissioner for 29 years, will be at 11 a.m. Saturday in the Welsheimer Funeral Home where friends may call after 7 p.m. Friday.
Rev. Rudolph Gelsey, pastor of the First Unitarian Church, will officiate. Burial will be in Riverview Cemetery.
Mr. Moomaw, 84, died of an apparent heart attack Wednesday afternoon in his home. Although he had been in declining health, he had been fairly active until his death. He had been under a physician's care for a heart ailment.
Mr. Moomaw was appointed city building commissioner on May 15, 1925. Upon his retirement from that post in 1954, he continued as assistant commissioner and consultant in the updating of the city building code. A well known authority on construction code objectives in the Middle West,
Mr. Moomaw was frequently consulted by other communities.
In 1955 he was honored by the South Bend Civic Planning Assn. for his years of service to the community.
He was graduated from the old South Bend High School and later from Michigan State College, East Lansing. He received his civil engineering degree from Cornell University, Ithaca, N.Y.
Before coming to South Bend in 1919, Mr. Moomaw was a state highway engineer in Cleveland, Ohio. He also taught engineering at Cornell University and Case School of Applied Sciences, Cleveland.
Mr. Moomaw was a life member of the American Assn. of Civil Engineers and a member of the First Unitarian Church; South Bend Lodge 294, F&AM; and Scottish Rite Bodies, Valley of South Bend.
Born in German Twp. on Dec. 27, 1879, he married Caroline Balbach in Grand Rapids on Sept. 10, 1908.
He is survived by his widow, a daughter, Mrs. Webster P. Jackson of Wakefield, Mass.; two grandsons; and a sister, Mrs. Frank Yoder, Pasadena, Calif.
The family requests that a donation to Mr. Moomaw's memory be made to the First Unitarian Church.
