DR. SCHUELL DIES AT AGE 63 Former Resident Was Authority on Aphasia Dr.
Hildred M. Schuell, 63, of Minneapolis, and formerly of South Bend, died at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday in her home.
She was a professor in the Department of Neurology at the University of Minnesota and was clinical director of the Aphasia Center at the Veterans' Hospital, Minneapolis.
She was born July 15, 1906, in South Bend. She had lived in Minneapolis for the last 22 years, moving from South Bend.
Surviving are a brother, John M. Schuell, of Rochester, Mich.; two sisters, Mrs. Forrest R. West, wife of the South Bend building commissioner and Mrs. Lucille Schuell Duggan, of Minneapolis.
Services Here Saturday: Friends may call from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday in the Orvis-Palmer Funeral Home, where services will be at 1 p.m. Saturday. Rev. Ellinwood, pastor of St. Charles, United Methodist Church, will officiate. Burial will be in Highland Cemetery.
She was internationally known in "Who's Who Among American Women," and "Who's Who in the Midwest." She was a fellow in the American Speech and Hearing Assn. and an affiliate of the Royal Society of Medicine. She was a member of the International Neuro-Psychology Assn.
She was an expert in the diagnosis and treatment of aphasia and has authored many books on this subject. She was a member of the American Academy of Aphasia and she won the Administration Award in 1964 for contributions in the aphasia field.
Works in Research: She was on the research group of the World Federation on Neurology and was a member of the American Men's Society of Science.
Bachelor's Degree: In 1930, she received a bachelor's degree in speech and English from Milwaukee Downer College, and then received her master's degree in speech and English at Breadloaf, the summer campus for the University of Vermont. She received a doctorate from the University of Iowa.
She had taught at Madison and Mussel, schools in South Bend and had worked at the University of London and the Sorbonne, before moving to Minnesota.
