SOUTH BEND Cecil Reid Putnam, 87, of McAllen, Texas, formerly of South Bend, died Tuesday in McAllen of natural causes. 

He spent may years as a motion picture machine operator until he retired to McAllen 28 years ago. He was a licensed short wave radio "Ham" operator for more than 70 years and was an AARL examiner holding an extra class license, the highest obtainable.. He was born March 4. 1906, in South Haven, Mich., and lived in Bend as a child.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Albert Putnam; a brother, Burt; a son, Jack;  and his first wife, Lanola Putnam.

He is survived by his wife, Mabel Anthony Putnam of McAllen; a daughter, Ruth Middleton of Elkhart: two stepdaughters, Anna Mae Carpenter of Sandia, Texas, and Jean Swenker of St. Simons, Ga.; and children.

Memorial services will be held at a later date. Kreidler Funeral Home. McAllen, is in charge of arrangements
