Opal L. Alward, 82, of 2960 James, town Court N., Mishawaka, formerly of South Bend, was dead on arrival at 1:45 p.m. Sunday in St. Joseph's Medical Center.

Mrs. Alward was a former registered nurse at Memorial Hospital. She retired in 1970 from the St. Joseph County Health Department and served for many years as a camp nurse at YMCA Camp Eberhart, Three Rivers. She was born Dec. 19, 1905, in Bruce Lake Station, Ind., and was a lifelong area resident.

On Oct. 18, 1933, in South Bend, as Opal Myers, she married Kenneth J. Alward. He died Nov. 26, 1963.

She is survived by a son, Kenneth F. of Portland, Ore.; and two sisters, Virginia Chesnut of Spring City, Tenn., and Mabel Papp of Martinsburg, W.Va.

There will be no services or visitation. Cremation will take place Michiana Crematory. Burial will be in Southlawn Cemetery. Welsheimer Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Alward was a member of Memorial Hospital School of Nursing Alumni Association.

Memorial contributions may be made to YMCA Camp Eberhart.
