Russell C. Kuehl
Russell C. Kuehl, 79, former Republican candidate for mayor and South Bend attorney, died at 11:30 a.m. Saturday, Jun 30, 1984, in Memorial Hospital. He was born on March 21, 1905, In South Bend, and he lived here throughout his life.
On June 15, 1935, In South Bend, he married Mary M. Moore, who survives. Also surviving are two sons, R Carder and James of South Bend, five grandchildren and two brothers, Robert of South Bend and Donald of Elkhart.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday in the First United Methodist Church in South Bend. Burial will be in St. Joseph Valley Memorial Park. Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. on Monday in the Welsheimer Funeral Home, 521 N. William, where Masonic memorial services will be at 7 p.m.
Mr. Kuehl was defeated by George A. Shock in 1947 in a close mayoral election. He received his doctorate of jurisprudence in 1929 from Notre Dame Law School. He began practicing law in St. Joseph County, where he was associated with the former deputy prosecuting attorney, Joseph Avery. In 1949, he was elected president of the St. Joseph County Bar Assoclation. Later, he was appointed senior partner of the law firm, Kuchl and Kuehl.
Mr. Kuehl was named president of the Memorial Hospital Board of Directors in 1969. Commissioned in the organized reserve in 1934, he entered active duty in February 1942, and served as staff judge advocate with the 20th Armored Division, serving in Europe during World War II. He was promoted to lieutenant colonel in 1944 and to colonel in 1954. He also was involved in the Reserve Officers organization.
Mr. Kuehl was involved in several civic organizations. He was elected president of the Kiwanis Club, and he was named thrice potent master by the Scottish Rite. He was a member of First United Methodist Church, where he served on the board of directors and the board of stewards. He was a member of the South Bend Lodge 294 F&AM, honorary member of the Supreme Council 33rd degree, and a member of the Orak Shrine Temple of Michigan City, the Benevolent Protector Order of the Elks, the Indiana Society of Chicago, the Coterie Club Indiana Players and the Depositors. He was a graduate of DePaul University.
