Judge George N. Beamer Sr

SOUTH BEND, Ind. — U.S. District Court Judge George N. Beamer Sr. died yesterday in the coronary care unit of South Bend Memorial Hospital, where he was admitted Oct. 5. He was 70 years old. He became senior judge of the federal court in South Bend April 2, when he moved from the Hammond district to succeed retired Judge Robert A. Grant. He was born Oct. 9, 1904, at Bowling Green, Ind.. and moved to South Bend as a child. He was graduated from South Bend Central High School in 1923 and received his law degree from the University of Notre Dame in 1929.
He was appointed city judge at South Bend in 1953 when he was 28. He served as St. Joseph County prosecutor, Indiana attorney general, chairman of the Indiana Public Service Commission (PSC) and chairman of the Indiana Aeronautics Commission. He was appointed attorney general in 1941 on the resignation of Samuel D. Jackson. He served as chairman of the PSC in 1943 and returned to South Bend the following year to practice law. At the time of his death, he was chairman of the federal trial judges section of the American Bar Association. Early in 1962 he was named by the late President John F. Kennedy to the federal judgeship for Northern Indiana at Hammond.
He suffered a slight heart attack in August and was admitted to Memorial Hospital but released Aug. 30. He was admitted again Oct. 5 after a second heart attack. During his second stay, his resignation from the bench was announced Oct. 8, the day before his 70th birthday. He had been in critical condition until his death.
Survivors include his widow, Charlotte; a son, George N. Beamer Jr., and a daughter, Mrs. Judith Roempager of South Bend.
Services will be at 2 p.m. tomorrow at the First Brethren Church. Burial will be at St. Joseph Memorial Park.
