Ethel Moomaw (Jackson) Fassnacht

Ethel Jackson Fassnacht, 93, of the Hamilton Grove Retirement Home, a descendant of a local pioneer family, died at 3 p.m. Tuesday in Memorial Hospital after a one-day illness.

She had taught at the former Kaley School in the early 1900s. She graduated from the former South Bend Central High School in 1907 and attended Rigdon Teachers Normal School, Winona Lake.

Born on March 28, 1887, in German Twp., she had lived in this area all her life. Her parents were William Chamberlain and Elizabeth Moomaw Jackson. Her grandfather, William Jackson, a local pioneer, developed the farm on Cleveland Road in German Twp. where she grew up.

On Oct. 11, 1911, in South Bend, she married Homer E. Fassnacht. He died on Jan. 16, 1980.

She is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Lewis S. Haber of South Bend and Mrs. Jean E. Pearce of Tokyo, Japan; two sons, H. Jackson Fassnacht of Niles and William Christopher of Stamford, Conn.; 11 grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 2:30 p.m. Friday in the Welsheimer Funeral Home, 521 N. William. Rev. Gary Forbes, pastor of the First United Methodist Church, will officiate along with Rev. Lester Bill, associate pastor of Grace United Methodist Church. Burial will be in City Cemetery. Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday in the funeral home.

She was a member of the Schuyler Colfax Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution, the First United Methodist Church, the Senior Citizens of the church, the United Methodist Women, the Progress Club, the South Bend Garden Club and the Civic Planning Association. Memorial contributions may be made to the First United Methodist Church.
