Dr. Charles Lyle Spain

Dr. Charles Lyle Spain, 80, vice president emeritus of Wayne University and a distinguished educator, died Thursday. He had been ill about two years.
Dr. Spain served Detroit’s public-school system for 38 years. He came to the city in 1901 to become vice principal of the Washington Normal School.
From 1919 to 1934, he was deputy superintendent of Detroit schools. He then became executive vice president of Wayne University. He retired in 1939.
Services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday in the William R. Hamilton Funeral Chapel. Burial will be in White Chapel Cemetery.
Dr. Spain is survived by his wife, Annie E.; four daughters, Mrs. Colin C. Campbell, of Wayne, Pa. and Mrs. Earl W. Jones, Mrs. Lewis Tower and Mrs. George B. Sherman, all of Detroit; nine grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
