Gladys Weatherspoon (Bigham)

Gladys Elizabeth Weatherspoon Bigham

Gladys E. Bigham, beloved wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, aunt, and friend; passed away on Sunday, June 27, 2021, joyfully joining her Heavenly Father for a well-deserved rest.

Gladys was preceded in death by her parents, Betty L. Branham and Joseph D.D. Weatherspoon; her loving husband, R.J. Bigham; nine siblings; and two daughters: Geraldine Weatherspoon and Janet Tate.

She is survived by five daughters: Etta Jane, Darlene, Bonnie, Lewana, Gayle; and one son, Russell.

Educated in the South Bend School system, Gladys was a proud 1938 graduate of Central High School. Being the second oldest daughter of a young widow with eight children, Gladys started working at a very young age. She worked as a domestic engineer, a typist during WWII, transitioned into the healthcare system, working at Wilton Rest Home for five years and Saint Joseph Hospital for 19 years. She ended her working career as a foster grandparent through Real Services until her health declined.

Gladys was a faithful member of Pilgrim Baptist Church for more than 92 years. She was very active in her church and it was the highlight of her day to attend Sunday services. Sunday being her favorite day of the week, she and her posse would attend different churches to enjoy their programs.

The family wishes to thank their sister Bonnie (Bonita) for faithfully taking loving care of our mother for over 20 years.
