SOUTH BEND • Mary Eileen Schlager, 70, of Birmingham, Mich., formerly of South died Oct. 18 in Henry Ford Hospital, Detroit. Formerly employed a at the University of Notre Dame Infirmary. Mrs. Schlager was a registered nurse.

She was born Jan. 11, 1920, in South Bend.

In 1940, at Notre Dame Chapel, she married Raymond Lee Schlager Jr. He died July 19, 1988.

Surviving are a daughter, Kathleen Melinda Wilbur of East Lansing; a son, Lawrence Michael of Mt. Clemens, Mich.; three grandchildren; a sister, Margaret Mary Stark of Mishawaka; and a brother, John Delbert Thompson of South Bend.

She helped found Cranbrook House for the mentally disabled. She also was a Friend of the Oakland County Public Library, Founders Member of the Detroit Institute of Arts and a longtime s supporter of the Detroit Symphony Orchestra.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at St. Regis Catholic Church, 3691 Lincoln Drive, Birmingham, Mich. Friends may call from 2 to 5 and 6 to 8 p.m. Monday at Bell Chapel of The Wm. R. Hamilton Co., Birmingham.
