Julia Russell "Julie" Swintz Mills

November 13, 1920 – May 19, 2000

 

Julia S. Mills, 79, of Tallahassee died Friday. The service will be at 4 p.m. Sunday at Westminster Oaks - Parry Center, with burial at a later date.

Memorial contributions may be made to LeMoyne Art Foundation Inc., 125 N. Gadsden St., Tallahassee, FL 32301 or to Tallahassee Little Theatre, 1861 Thomasville Road, Tallahassee, FL 32303.

A native of South Bend, Ind., she had lived in Tallahassee since 1989. She was active at Westminster Oaks and was a volunteer at LeMoyne Art Foundation.

She is survived by a son, Jonathan Mills of Carmel, Ind.; a daughter, Sally Butzin of Tallahassee; a sister, Martha Watkins of Marion, N.Y.; and four grandchildren.

Julie and Dick Mills joined the Theatre of Western Springs in 1963 upon moving to Western Springs from Greenville PA when Dick took the position of Director of Administrative Services at the American Bar Association in Chicago. Julie was active both on stage, backstage and front of the house duties. After taking Studio, her first onstage role was a cast member in "The Adding Machine" in 1966. She closed out several other roles with "And Miss Reardon Drinks a Little" in 1978. Julie's first backstage love was props where she chaired many productions over her TWS years. For several years she was the TWS Membership chair, running the entire operation from her basement at home. She also served one term on the Board of Governors and was the first female to serve as chair. She graduated from DePauw University in Greencastle IN as a Journalism major.
