Joseph J. Makielski Jr.

Joseph J. Makielski Jr., 63, of 1118 Woodward Ave., died at 8:02 a.m. today in St. Joseph's Medical Center after a brief illness. He was president of Makielski Art Shop, Inc., in which he was active for 50 years.

The Makielski Art Shop was founded on April 1, 1911, by Makielski's father, the late Joseph J. Sr., and has been at its present location on N. Main St. since 1930. The shop specializes in making frames, restoring old paintings and stocking a variety of art supplies. Born on Jan. 1, 1920, in South Bend, the younger Makielski had lived here all of his life.

On Nov. 23, 1942, in South Bend, he married the former Theodora T. (Teddy) Pfleger. She survives along with two daughters, Mrs. Mary Margaret (Susie) Dawson of Sacramento, Calif., and Mrs. Patrick (Katherine) Hannan of Sebastopol, Calif.; four sons, Dr. Jonathan C. Makielski of Evergreen Park, Ill., David J. Makielski of Mishawaka, Eric P. Makielski of Edwardsburg, and Charles (Cork) Makielski of Mishawaka; nine grandchildren; a sister, Mrs. Anthony (Barbara) Nania of Indiana, Pa.; and two brothers, Thomas Makielski of Rochester, N.Y., and John P. Makielski of Edwardsburg.

A son, Michael T. Makielski, died in April 1982.

Makielski was active in the South Bend Rotary Club, a charter member of the Eagle Lake Yacht Club in Edwardsburg, and a member of Knollwood Country Club, Holy Cross Catholic Church, Friends of the Snite Museum, South Bend Turner's, Northern Indiana Historial Society, the South Bend Art Center, and the National Art Materials Trade Association.

A veteran of World War II, he served in the U.S. Army Air Corps.

The McGann Funeral Home, 624 N. Notre Dame Ave., is handling arrangements. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society or Hospice of St. Joseph County
