NILES -Lester Lutes, 47, of 2709 Southeast Dr., South Bend, was injured fatally at 4:45 p.m. Friday when the automobile he was driving failed to negotiate a turn and ran into an embankment at an intersection about seven miles north of Niles on M- 140. The accident occurred at the Pokagon Rd. intersection. Michigan State Police at the Niles Post said Lutes was driving south on M-140 and apparently fell asleep.

Lutes were taken to Berrien General Hospital, Berrien Center. Lutes died in the hospital at 5:45 p.m. Friday.

He was born on Nov. 23, 1919, in South Bend, and married Barbara Ann Koehler on June 25, 1949. She survives along with two daughters, Sandy and Susan, both of South Bend; his stepmother, Mrs. Freda Lutes of South Bend; three brothers, Cloyce of Sarasota, Glenn of South Bend and Warren of Los Alamos, N,M.; and two sisters, Mrs. Eloise Weaver of Fort Wayne and Mrs. Naomi White of Maitland, Fla.

Friends may call from 7:30 to 9 p.m. today and from 2 to 9 p.m. Sunday at the Hickey Funeral Home. Services will be at 1:30 p.m. Monday in the Ridgedale Presbyterian Church, Rev. Charles Franklin Bruce officiating. Burial will be in Highland Cemetery.
