Irene A. (Jurek) Baker

Irene A. (Jurek) Baker, 85, formerly of South Bend, passed away peacefully with her family by her side at Banner Desert Medical Center in Mesa, Arizona, on Tuesday, September 20, 2005.
She was preceded in death by her husband of almost 63 years, Donald E. Baker Jr. in July of this year, and by a brother, Raymond Jurek.
She is survived by her daughter, Donna J. Baker of Tempe, Arizona; and two granddaughters, Paige Tuhey of San Francisco, California, and Eve Steed and her husband, Donald of Los Gatos, California; and her greatgrandchildren, Spencer William (4) and Ruby Irene (1).
Irene was born in Chicago, Illinois, on February 13, 1920, and was raised and lived in South Bend. She graduated from South Bend Central High and from St. Joseph's School of Nursing in 1942. Irene and her family were members of St. Matthew Cathedral Parish for 52 years.
She and her husband Don were also members of the Elks Lodge. Irene retired from nursing at the age of 70. Her years of service included work with St. Joseph and Memorial Hospitals, and a private duty agency. She enjoyed her membership with Delta Theta Chi Sorority where she made many dear friendships.
In her retirement years she and her husband were members of the Morris Park Country Club, and since August 2000 enjoyed living in Lehigh Acres, Florida, where Irene played golf and bridge with her friends. She delighted in visits from her daughter, granddaughters and great-grandchildren. Irene was dearly loved, and will be missed but never forgotten.
Visitation will be at St. Joseph Funeral Home, 1827 East Ireland Road, on Monday, September 26, 2005, from 11 a.m. until 12:30 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial will be in the Cathedral of St. Matthew at 1 p.m. on Monday. Burial will follow at Chapel Hill Cemetery, Osceola.
