Neal Louis Hans

Neal Louis Hans, 81, of 39th Street South, St. Petersburg, Fla., formerly of Mishawaka, Ind., passed away after an extended illness at 1:10 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 1, in the Bay Pointe Nursing Facility, St. Petersburg. Mr. Hans was born on April 11, 1919, in South Bend, Ind., as the son of the late Theodore and Anna (Lederer) Hans. He was a South Bend/Mishawaka area resident until he moved to Florida in 1975.
On Feb. 19, 1965, in South Bend, he married the former Venus Hardy. Mr. Hans is survived by his wife of 35 years, Venus; two daughters, Charlene (Ron) Magee of Midlothian, Va., and Raenelle (Bob) Smith of Osceola, Ind.; two sons, Ronald T. (Pat) Hans of South Bend and Rick Hardy of Mishawaka; and by six grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
Mr. Hans was a United States Navy veteran of World War II. After returning home, he was employed from 1947 to 1968 by the South Bend Police Department and retired as captain of the Detective Bureau. Mr. Hans also served as a probation officer for the City of South Bend from 1968 to 1971. He was a the owner and operator of Hans End Zone Lounge in Mishawaka. After he moved to Florida and served as attendance specialist for the Pinnellas County School System from 1978 to 1991.
He was a member of the Fraternal Order of Police, Lodge # 36, the Masonic Lodge # 45, was a member of the Scottish Rite, the Shriners Orak Temple, Shrine Club. He was also an official for the Indiana College and the Indiana High School Football team.
Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. on Monday, Sept. 11, in the Hahn Funeral Home, 505 West 8th Street, Mishawaka, with Rev. Donald Miller officiating. Friends may call from 2 to 6 p.m. on Sunday in the funeral home.
