SOUTH BEND - Nancy M. Shaffer, 86, a lifelong resident of South Bend, passed away at 8:10 a.m. Monday, January 29, 2007, in Memorial Hospital of South Bend. She was born October 7, 1920, in South Bend, the daughter of Charles and Margaret (Smith) Chasey, and was a 1938 graduate of Central High School.

On September 21, 1947, in South Bend, as Nancy Chasey, she married Carl L. Shaffer, who preceded her in death in February 1966. She was also preceded in death by a brother, Philip G. Chasey.

Mrs. Shaffer retired in 1989 as secretary of the Building and Grounds Dept. of the South Bend Community School Corp. where she was employed for 23 years. She was an active member of Evangel Heights United Methodist Church, Order of Eastern Star Chapter #569, White Shrine of Jerusalem #10, Retired Indiana Public Employee's Association, and the Retired Secretary's Association of the South Bend Community School Corp.

Nancy is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Barbara and Terry Dickerson of South Bend; her two sons, William C. Shaffer of South Bend, and Robert S. Shaffer and his wife, Nancy of El Paso, TX. Also surviving are four grandchildren, James Shaffer, Anne (Matthew) Emery, Jeffrey (Pamela) Dickerson and Laura Dickerson; two great- grandchildren, Dylan Herthoge and Bren Dickerson. A sister-in-law, Velma Chasey of South Bend, and a nephew, David Chasey of Lafayette, IN, survive Nancy as well.

Services will be at 11:00 a.m. Friday, February 2, 2007, in Palmer Funeral Home-River Park, 2528 Mishawaka Ave., South Bend. Rev. Pat Somers, her pastor, will officiate. Burial will be at St. Joseph Valley Memorial Park, Granger, IN. The family will receive friends from 2:00 to 4:00 and 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 1, in the Palmer Funeral Home- River Park, where members of the Order of Eastern Star Chapter #569 will conduct a memorial service at 7:30 p.m. Contributions in memory of Nancy M. Shaffer may be made to Evangel Heights United Methodist Church, 114 North Ironwood Drive, South Bend, IN 46615; or to the American Heart Association, 3816 Paysphere Circle, Chicago, IL 60674.
