Wilmer Ray Barts

Jan. 22, 1921 - July 26, 2005

Wilmer Ray Barts, 84, of South Bend, passed away following an illness on Tuesday, July 26, in Saint Joseph Regional Medical Center. He was born January 22, 1921, in South Bend, to the late Chasty Barts and Mabel Reeder. Also preceding him in death were two sisters and three brothers.

On August 4, 1956, in Vincennes, IN, he married the former Ruby J. Doane, who survives along with their three sons, Dale Barts (Colleen) of Niles, Ml, David Barts of Nappanee, Ind., and Douglas Barts (Peggy) of Noblesville, IN; four grandchildren, Emily, Zachary, Holly and Matthew Barts; and his sister, Irene Grubbs of Niles.

Mr. Barts was a lifetime resident of South Bend and graduated from South Bend Central in 1938, retired from Bendix in 1986 and worked in Energy Control Systems in the final calibration department. He was a veteran of the Army in World War II, serving in Central Europe in the 924 Field Artillery Unit. Mr. Barts was a member of the 99th Infantry Division Association and was very proud of his service to our country.

Wilmer was an avid Notre Dame fan and also followed the Cubs.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. on Friday, July 29, in the Welsheimer Family Funeral Home North, 17033 Cleveland Road, and burial with military rites will be at Mount Pleasant Cemetery. Friends may call today from 4 to 8 p.m. in the funeral home.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Riverbend Cancer Association or to the St. Joseph County Heart Association
