Evelyn Marie “Evie” (Whitmyer) Steele

SOUTH BEND - Evelyn "Evie" M. Steele, 90, of Newburgh, IN, formerly of Miami Street, South Bend, IN, passed away on Saturday, February 13, at the Angel River Health and Rehabilitation Center, Newburgh. She was born on November 29, 1919, in South Bend, to the late Anna (Klotz) and John W. Whitmyer.

On July 3, 1943, in Long Beach, CA, as Evelyn M. Whitmyer, she married Donald W. Steele, who preceded her in death on December 1, 2005. Evie was also preceded in death by a sister, Bernice Seaman.

Surviving Evie are a daughter, Susan M. (Joe) Wells of Newburgh; a grandson, James A. Wells of Carlsbad, CA; and a granddaughter, Sara M. Wells of Newburgh.

Evie was a stenographer for the Bendix Corporation and was also a receptionist for Doctors Cox and Buck in South Bend. She was a devoted and longtime member of the First United Methodist Church in South Bend.
