SOUTH BEND — Merrill B. Smith, 88, residing in South Bend, passed away unexpectedly on Tuesday, September 11, 2007, in the emergency room of Memorial Hospital.
He was born January 13, 1919, in Galien, Michigan, to Lester and Mildred (Babcock) Smith, and had lived in South Bend all of his life.
On May 29, 1941, in Napoleon, Ohio, he was united in marriage to Lucile Frances Nusshart. In May they celebrated their 66th wedding anniversary. In addition to his wife Lucile, his daughter, Marcia Boudreau, and her husband, Daniel of Granger, and son, Richard Merrill of Hawaii, survive him.Also surviving are four grandchildren, Blake Smith, Amy Smith, Bryan Boudreau and Brad Boudreau, and three great-grandchildren, Autumn and Hunter Smith, and Wesley Boudreau.
Mr. Smith was a loving husband, father and grandfather. He loved to grow roses, was an avid fisherman and gardener, and was a huge Cubs fan. He served his country proudly in the United States Navy during WWII. He was a member of the American Legion River Park Post 303, V.F.W. Post 1167, the former Moose Lodge of South Bend, and the National Association of Letter Carriers. He retired from the United States Postal Service in South Bend following 35 years of service. Above all these things, he loved his family very much.
Services will be at 11:00 a.m.Saturday, Sept.15, 2007, in Palmer Funeral Home-River Park, 2528 Mishawaka Ave., South Bend. Dr. Bud Steadman, pastor of Community Baptist Church, will officiate.Burial will follow at St.Joseph Valley Memorial Park, Granger. The family will receive friends from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m.Friday in the funeral home.
