CAROLYN L. (FREDERICKS) HESS

March 25, 1920 - May 24, 2011
SOUTH BEND - Carolyn Louise (Federicks) Hess, was born March 25, 1920, in South Bend, Indiana, to Julia Lezer and Emil De Rose. She was raised by her grandparents, Alex and Caroline Lezer, and her mother and stepfather, Emery Fredericks, along with her siblings, Mae, Gertrude and Eugene.

Carolyn graduated from South Bend Central High School in 1939. She then graduated from a local business college.

She retired in 1985 from Curtis Products of South Bend after 21 years of employment. She and her husband of 31 years, Robert V. Hess, were dedicated members of the South Bend Elks Lodge, where they spent many hours among friends. Carolyn was president of the South Bend Elks Lodge Ladies Auxiliary and very active throughout her time as a member. She was a terrific dancer from childhood, did her crossword puzzles with a pen, and had beautiful penmanship.

She was preceded in death by parents, and her sister, Gertrude Napier.

In addition to her husband, she is survived by her daughter, Sherrill S. Friedman of Niles, MI; stepsons, Doug (Linda) Hess of San Antonio TX, Dan (Michele) Hess of Wakarusa, IN, and Brad Hess of Mishawaka. She also has a granddaughter, Nancy K. Friedman of Niles, MI, and a grandson, Eric (Jodi) Friedman of Midland, MI; four step-grandchildren and three great-grandchildren; her sister, Mae Baird of Mishawaka, IN; and a brother, Eugene (Mary Ann) Fredericks of Bonita Springs, FL.

The family will receive friends from 4:00 until 8:00 pm today, May 26, 2011, in the Bubb Funeral Chapel, 3910 N. Main St., Mishawaka. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 1:00 p.m., with visitation one hour prior on Friday, May 27th, in Little Flower Catholic Church, 54191 N. Ironwood, South Bend, with Fr. Neil Ryan officiating. Entombment is to follow the service at St. Joseph Valley Memorial Park in Granger, IN. Memorial contributions may be made to the Center for Hospice Care, 111 Sunnybrook Court, South Bend, IN 46637.
