PFC Alexander Clement “Alex” Smogor

Private Smogor drowned July 13. in Samois-sur-Seina, France, according a war department telegram received by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Smogor. Private Smogor was a veteran of the Normandy invasion, battles St. and the Ardennes forest and the northern crossing of Rhine into Germany. Since the cessation of hostilities he had been serving in the American redeployment of units at Samois-sur-Seine.

He was born March 12, 1919 in South Bend and attended St. Hedwige's parochial and graduated from Central Senior High School where he had won Twin City honors in football as a fullback. He had started on a football career in the same position at Indiana university, Bloomington, until injuries forced him to retire from the squad.

He had been employed at the Indiana Lumber & Manufacturing company until service March 27, 1942, He received his training at Camps Livingston, La., Gordon Johnston, Fla., and Pickett, Va. He had served overseas since October, 1943, and had won five battle stars.

He was engaged to Miss Helena P. Babich. Surviving besides the parents are two brothers, Casimir and Irwin Smogor, both of South Bend, and a sister, Miss Hildegarde Smogor, at home.

Memorial services will be held in St. Hedwige's Roman Catholic church at 8:30 a.m. Aug. 13 with Rev. Stanislaus A. Gruza, C.S.C., pastor, officiating
