Mary Lu (Quimby) Whiting

Mary Lu Whiting, 89, residing in South Bend, passed away at 2:15 pm, Monday, December 13, 2010 in the Sanctuary at Holy Cross in South Bend. Mary Lu was born January 19, 1921 in South Bend to Ralph W. and Mary Ellen (Hoover) Quimby and remained a lifelong resident.

On August 16, 1941 in South Bend, she married Charles D. Whiting, Jr., who survives. Mary Lu was an operator for Indiana Bell Telephone and retired in 1966 after 21 years. She was a member of the South Bend Bridge Club.

In addition to her loving husband of 69 years, Charles, Mary Lu is survived by one daughter, Susan (Patrick) O'Neill of South Bend; one son, Charles D. (Joyce) Whiting, III of Greenfield, IN; six grandchildren, Charles IV, Jennifer, Clay, Kyle, Angela and Tiffanee; as well as two great grandchildren, Samantha and Caitlin. She was preceded in death by five sisters, Lilian Katona, Ruth Heeter, Patty Reader, Nelly Mae Quimby and Daryl Ruscio; and six brothers, Lester, John, Robert, Ralph Jr., Charles and William Clayton Quimby.

Funeral services for Mary Lu will be 11:00 am, Thursday, December 16, 2010 in the Palmer Funeral Home - Hickey Chapel, 17131 Cleveland Road, South Bend, with Pastor Charles L. King officiating. Private burial will be held at a later date at Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens. Friends may visit with the family from 5:00 - 7:00 pm, Wednesday, December 15 and one hour prior to services on Thursday in the funeral home.
