Louella E. (McDaniel) Curtis

Louella E. Curtis, 94, passed away in Charlotte, NC, on September 3, 2015, after a long and blessed life. Born January 2, 1921 in Atlanta, GA to Adolphus McDaniel and Junia Moore, she moved to South Bend, IN where she attended elementary and high school before returning to Atlanta where she attended Spelman College.

Louella married Felix D. Curtis in 1942 and settled in South Bend, Indiana and had a son Felix Clark. She was an excellent pianist who played and directed the Senior and Men's choir of the First AME Zion Church of South Bend until she and her spouse moved to Indianapolis, Indiana in 1960. It was there that she became an accomplished quilter winning several awards for her work. Louella and her spouse travelled throughout the United States and abroad for many years before she became president of her housing association at Kingston Square Apartments. In her later years and after the death of her spouse she moved with her son to Charlotte, NC.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her sister, Juanita Mason and brother-in-law, Alvin Mason; and her husband of 64 years, Felix D. Curtis. Louella is survived by her son, Felix C. Curtis and daughter-in-law Cheryl Curtis; grandchildren, Tamu Imani Curtis and Bomani Akinyele (Karla) Curtis; and great-grandchildren, Tamia and Jacob Curtis. 

A Celebration of Life Service will be held on Friday, September 18, 2015 at 1 p.m. at Flanner and Buchanan - Washington Park East, 10722 E. Washington St., Indianapolis, IN 46229 with a visitation from 12 p.m. until time of service. Burial will immediately follow at Washington Park East Cemetery.
