Helen L. Cassells, 81, of Southfield Village, passed away on Monday, June 16, 2003. She had struggled with Parkinson’s disease and osteoporosis over the last year. Helen was born in South Bend, Ind., to (Charles) Leo Frank and Della (Jeffries) Frank.

She was preceded in death by her parents, and by her sister, Rubyle (Merrill) Weesner.

She is survived by her husband of 55 years, Earl Cassells; her son, Mark (Linda) Cassells of Indianapolis. Ind.; her daughter, Jan (Willy) Steiner of Park Ridge, Ill.; her five grandchildren, Mike (Molli) Cassells, Anne Cassells, Kathryn Steiner, Meg Steiner and Gus Steiner; a dear cousin, Patricia McHenry of Mishawaka, Ind.; her sister-in-law, Gladys Branco of Holstein, Iowa; and her nieces and nephews, Barbara Branco, Bruce Branco, Pat (Phil) Skodinski, Larry (Marilyn) Pozgay, Lee (Kathleen) Pozgay, Cathy Roroch (Ron DiSanto), Terry (Sue) Weesner, Chery Van Sickle and Michelle Weesner.

Helen was always very active in the First Christian Church of South Bend where she was a member for 65 years. She was president of the congregation, president of the Christian Women’s Fellowship, Sunday school teacher of youth and adults, and elder of the congregation. She was also vice president of Church Women United. Helen worked as a secretary for the Indiana State Police for nine years. She was a member of the Progress Club and served as a computer coach at the Leighton Center. Helen was an avid bridge and euchre player, and participated in many clubs throughout her life.

Funeral services will be held on Friday, June 20, at 11 a.m. in the First Christian Church in South Bend. Burial will follow at St. Joseph Valley Memorial Park in Granger, Ind. Family and friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. today in the Forest G. Hay Funeral Home, and one hour prior to service time in the church on Friday.
