SANFORD A. GOODRICK

Sanford A. Goodrick, Jr. Aug. 8, 1921 - Sept. 22, 2014 MISHAWAKA - Sanford Alonzo Goodrick, Jr., 93, of Mishawaka died Monday, September 22nd in his residence. Mr. Goodrick was born August 8, 1921 in South Bend to the late Iva G. (Keim) and Sanford A. Goodrick and was a lifetime area resident.

On December 19, 1953 in Elwood, IN he married Betty L. Dickey who preceded him in death on October 13, 1988. He was also preceded in death by his brother, D. Taylor Goodrick.

He is survived by his daughter, Judith L. Heying and husband, Robert of South Bend; nephews, Wayne Goodrick of Joshua Tree, CA and Jeff Goodrick and wife, Shallako and their daughter Randi of Carlsbad, CA; and his sisters-in-law, Janelle Goodrick of Yucca Valley, CA, Virgie Mast of Port Charlotte, FL, and Sue Mann and husband, Sam of Elwood, IN.

The family would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to his wonderful caregivers, Kathy, Charlie, Ronda, and Monica.

Sandy graduated from South Bend Central High School in 1939 and went to work for First Discount, a precursor of First Bank and Trust.

He enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1942 with a rating of Radioman 2nd Class. Sandy worked as an air traffic controller on the island of Tarawa and gained a lifelong friend, Jim Seaman, of Ohio. He later served in Europe and was discharged in 1946. Sandy returned to South Bend and resumed working for First Discount/First Bank and Trust. In 1958 he became an internal auditor, traveling the Midwest. He joined the audit department of Associates Financial which gave him the opportunity to travel throughout the U.S. and Canada. Sandy eventually was promoted to head of the field audit group. When Associates moved to Texas, Sandy went for one year, then took early retirement and returned to South Bend where he continued to work for First Bank/First Source until his retirement in 1986.

Sandy was a lifelong rail fan, influenced by his grandfather, a senior conductor on the South Shore. He combined his interest in trains with an interest in photography and became a sought-after source for slides of various rail lines. His photographs have been included in Under Milwaukee Wires and Grand Trunk Western in Color and were the sole source for Trackside on NYC's Western Division. Sandy became a baptized member of the First Brethren Church of South Bend in 1948 and served as Deacon, Treasurer, Financial Secretary, Sunday School Teacher, and choir member. Some men are men of letters but Sandy was a man of numbers.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Friday, September 26th in the Welsheimer Family Funeral Home, 521 N. William St. with Rev. Larry Baker of First Brethren Church of South Bend officiating. Committal services and burial will follow in Highland Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 4 until 7 p.m. Friday, September 25th in the funeral home.
