Irvin J. Manuszak

SOUTH BEND — Former St. Joseph County Clerk Irvin J. Manuszak, 73, of Chimes Boulevard and Magician Lake, Dowagiac, died at 3:40 p.m. Thursday in St. Joseph's Medical Center. Mr. Manuszak was first elected clerk in 1978, and was re-elected to that office in 1982. He also served six years as chief deputy clerk. He was regional coordinator for presidential campaigns of Sens. Edmund Muskie and Birch Bayh, and was county coordinator for former Third District Congressman John Brademas. Mr. Manuszak also was a former insurance agent and division manager for Prudential Insurance Co.

He was born July 3, 1921, in South Bend. On July 21, 1956, in South Bend, he married Helen A. Miholick. She survives with a sister, Marie Przestwor of South Bend; and nieces and nephews.

He was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, Achievement Forum, Knights of Columbus Santa Maria Council 553, Retired Indiana Public Employees Association, West Side Democratic Club, Mishawaka-Penn Democratic Mens Club, Mishawaka Belgium Democratic Club, Polish American Business Professional Men's Association, South Bend Press Club, Combined Democratic & Civic Clubs, National Association of Retired Credit Union Persons and Indiana Association of Clerks of the Circuit Court. He was founder of Veterans of Foreign Wars Golden Hills Post 8748, past chairman for the March of Dimes, former member of St. Hedwig Catholic Church, a volunteer for United Way Speakers Bureau and an Army veteran of World War II.

Memorial services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday in St. Hedwig Catholic Church. Private services were today in Highland Cemetery. There will be no visitation. McGann Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. Memorial contributions may be made to Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis Association, 21021 Ventura Blvd., Suite 321, Woodland Hills, CA 91364, Center for the Homeless or Hope Rescue Mission.
