Mary Louise Stephens, 81, peacefully submitted to the call of her Savior on Monday, Nov. 20, in Huntsville, Ala. Mrs. Stephens was born on June 23, 1919, in Hickman, Ky., to the late Lonnie and Lillian Luten. She was also preceded in death by a brother, Alexander Luten; and by a sister, Geraldine Collins.

On May 16, 1972, in South Bend, Ind., she united in holy matrimony with Leroy Stephens, who survives. She is also survived by five daughters, Heidi Coleman Traylor, Emma Cooper, Debra Stephens, Lillian Taylor and Angela Melacon; two sons, Leroy Stephens Jr. and Eric Stephens; a brother, Joseph Luten; and by a sister, Ann Nell Waters of South Bend.

Mary Louise was a retired educator. She truly loved to give children an opportunity to learn. She demonstrated this love by organizing and mentoring pre-school children, not only in her own neighborhood but also in the community at large. Her travels were extensive, and she endeavored to cultivate excellence and commitment to the educational process among all. Not only was she a gifted musician, but she shared her God-given gifts with others, especially the children she loved.

Mary Louise received her bachelor's in education from Kentucky State University, and later completed her master's in music at Notre Dame. Mary Louise loved the Lord with all her heart. She was a member of the Grace A.M.E. Zion Church, and was currently attending St. John A.M.E.

Church in Huntsville. She was very active in the Christian education departments of both churches. She was a former member of the service guild of Grace. She was an active life member of the Delta Sigma Theta Public Service Sorority. Funeral services for Mrs.

Stephens will be held at 1 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 24, in Grace A.M.E. Zion Church. Interment will follow at Riverview Cemetery.
