Charles W. Hayden, 40, of 1849 Campeau St., died of a heart attack at 6:30 p.m. Monday in his residence. He had been ill a month.

He was born in Gary on March 13, 1921, and had resided in South Bend 30 years, coming here from Gary. Mr. Hayden was an aeronautical engineer at the Bendix Corp.

Surviving are his widow, the former Joan Gall, whom he married on June 12, 1949, in South Bend. Other survivors are his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Howard H. Hayden, of San Clemente, Calif., and two sisters, Mrs. B. B. Buckingham of Denver, Colo., and Mrs. William H. Ebling of Lima. OH.

Mr. Hayden was a member of the First Presbyterian Church and the Bendix Supervisors Club. He graduated from Central High School in 1939 and the University of Colorado, Boulder City. He was a lieutenant in the Air Force during World War II.
