SOUTH BEND - Frances Bell Heim, 91, of South Bend, passed away Tuesday morning in Memorial Hospital, after a lengthy illness. Frances was born April 6, 1921, in Mentone, Indiana to the late George H. and Lena (Shanton) Emmons.

As a small child, her family moved to South Bend where she met her lifelong friend, Gladys Peterson and graduated from South Bend Central High School in 1939. She also spent many happy summers back on the farm in Mentone, where she learned to drive through the fields in a Model T.

On November 13, 1941 she married Robert H. Heim of South Bend, who preceded her in death in 1978. During WW II she worked at Studebaker cleaning and painting Higgens Boats, then moved with Robert to Mississippi for his Naval training. After the War, she concentrated on keeping a home and raising their two boys. Soon after Robert's death she went to work at St. Mary's College as a part-time night desk clerk and she retired from there in 2008 after twenty-nine years. She was an active traveler and shopper up to her last year. She was a member of the Order of Eastern Star #569 from 1979 until 2011.

Frances is survived by her two sons, Michael and James Heim, both of South Bend; her sister, Donna Clark of Eau Claire, MI; brother, George Emmons of Dowagiac, MI; nephew, Gary Clark of Union, MI; and great-nephew, Cory Kovacs of Dowagiac, MI.

Visitation will be held from 12:00 to 2:00 p.m. today, Friday, January 11, 2013, at Welsheimer Family Funeral Home, 521 N. William St., South Bend. There will be no services.
