NEWPORT BEACH - Laura Lagios, city clerk here since 1967, died Tuesday of cancer. She was 55. Services for Mrs. Lagios, a president of the Women's Division of the Newport Harbor Chamber of Commerce and the Zonta Club of Newport Harbor, will be held at 2 p.m. today at St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church, 600 St. Andrews Ave.

Born on an Indiana farm, Mrs. Lagios later moved to Chicago. She worked as a lathe operator in a defense plant during World War II and later served as a Navy WAVE.

After attending the University of Houston in Texas and Roosevelt College in Chicago, she came to Newport Beach in 1964 and worked in the medical records department at Hoag Hospital. She died there after being hospitalized more than two months. She was appointed city clerk in 1967, after working in the office a year. Mrs. Lagios also served the Chamber of Commerce for many years as program chairman, a member of the board of directors, and as a member of numerous committees.

Mrs. Lagios, a Costa Mesa resident, is survived by two daughters, Christine Saye and Debra Jo Lagios, both of Costa Mesa; two grandchildren, Tiffany and Jamie Saye; a brother, George Calvert of Texas and two sisters, Mildred Pittillo of Newport Beach and Margaret Howsam of Indiana.

Burial, to be handled by Baltz-Bergeron Mortuary of Costa Mesa, will be private
