Elsie E. (Burkus) Hogan

Elsie E. Hogan, 81, of North Portage Avenue, South Bend, Ind., passed away on Friday, May 3, 2002, in Hospice House, South Bend. Mrs. Hogan was born on March 8, 1921, in South Bend, to the late Emery and Mary (Varga) Burkus.

On Dec. 28, 1948, in South Bend, as Elsie E. Burkus, she married Dr. Vincent P. Hogan, who preceded her in death in November 1988.

Mrs. Hogan is survived by a daughter, Mary Ellen Hogan of Beverly Hills, Calif.; a son-in-law, Dr. Robert Lavey of Beverly Hills; three grandchildren, Danielle, Ephraim and Moriah Lavey, all of Beverly Hills; and by a sister, Gladys C. Burkus of South Bend.

Mrs. Hogan was a graduate of South Bend Central High School and the South Bend College of Commerce. She worked as the secretary for former South Bend Mayor Dempsey in the 1940s. Mrs. Hogan was a parishioner of Holy Cross Catholic Church, South Bend.

Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. today, May 5, in the Kaniewski Funeral Home, 3545 N. Bendix Drive, South Bend, where a parish Rosary will be recited at 5 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:30 a.m. Monday, May 6, in Holy Cross Catholic Church, with burial to follow at Highland Cemetery, South Bend. Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice House, 111 Sunnybrook Court, South Bend, IN 46637-3437.
