Berrien Springs school board veteran dies
BERRIEN SPRINGS - George H. Bennett, 55, of Rt. 2, Red Bud Tr., who served 16 years on the Berrien Springs school board, died of a heart attack at 11:30 p.m. Wednesday in his home. Bennett was born on July 5, 1921, in Ilion, NY., and first went to Buchanan in 1946 from South Bend before moving to Berrien Springs.
On June 22, 1946, in South Bend, he married the former Elizabeth McClure. She survives along with his mother, Mrs. Fred Bennett of South Bend; two sons, George H. Jr. of Columbus, Ohio, and Douglas, at home; three daughters, Miss Elizabeth Bennett of Berrien Springs, Mrs. Michael (Ann) Snyder of Benton Harbor and Miss Susan Bennett, at home, and two brothers, Fred Bennett of South Bend and Charles Bennett of West Mount, Ill.
Mr. Bennett was manager of the engineering department of the Buchanan Steel Co., division of National Standard. He was a Navy veteran of World War II.
Memorial services will be held at 11a.m. Saturday in the First Presbyterian Church in Buchanan, where he was a member, with Rev. Keith Morrow officiating. Friends may call from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday in the Swem Chapel of the Swem-Smith Funeral Home and after noon Friday in the family home.
Memorials may be made to the Berrien County Historical Society.
