Louis James Balka, 52, of 17636 Ironstone, died at 11 a.m. Tuesday in Osteopathic Hospital after a month's illness. He was an employe of the South Bend Park Department. 

Born June 6, 1922, in South Bend, he married Marjorie Ann Balosky on 1 Sept. 6, 1947 and she survives. Other survivors include two sons, Gregory Alan and Jefferey Scott, at home; a daughter, Nancy Jo, a student at Indiana University, Bloomington; six brothers, John, and Frank, both of South Bend; Steve of North Hollywood, Calif.; James of Burbank, Calif.; Paul of Los Angeles and Alex of Plymouth; three sisters, Mrs. Joseph M. Husvar of South Bend; Mrs. Jack Fearon of Woodland Hills, Calif., and Mrs. Herschel Miller of Royal Oak, Mich.

Friends may call from 7 to 9 p.m. today and from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday in the Hickey Funeral Home, 3516 E. Jefferson. Balka was a member of St. Paul's Memorial Methodist Church, South Bend Elks Lodge 235 and the South Bend Press Club.

He was a veteran of World War II and a member of the Disabled American Veterans Chapter 6.

Memorials may be made to the St. Joseph County Cancer Society.
