Died August 5, 1947 in South Bend, Indiana at Memorial Hospital. First name was sometimes spelled Zonla. She was wife of Judge Dan Zoula. They lived at 1273 Woodward Avenue in South Bend Indiana. Born July 29, 1873. But death certificate states born July 19, 1873. Born to (father) Francis M Johnson, and (mother) Irene (Turner) Johnson. Both parents were from New York. Zoula was born to Francis H. Johnson and Irene Turner Johnson in South Bend, Indiana, July 19th 1873. Her family came to Indiana from the Niagara County area of New York. Zoula was a member of the DAR. Zoula A. Johnson married attorney Dan Pyle August 17th 1907. Zoula was formally married to Hiram R. Uncapher, divorced.

Zoula studied at Valparaiso University and The Pabst Music Conservatory ,Rochestor, New York. She was an accomplished pianist and teacher. She also worked on a wider scale to put on the first musical in the area in 1917. Zoula was featured in a local publication in South Bend, Indiana titled, “Women’s Realm” as one of the notable figures having made contributions to the community.

Zoula, was a member of the Methodist Episcopal Church and promoted orchestra participation at area churches. Music was a theme in the family as her son became a musician as well. Zoula and Dan raised Dr. Francis J. Pyle and Mrs. Irene Pyle Millar.

Francis served as Dean at Drake University, Des Moines. Iowa. He studied at, Oberlin College, Notre Dame, Normal State College, Terre Haute, and Washington University, Seattle. He taught Math and History and was a band director at Yakima High School in Washington State. He did his graduate work at the Eastman School of Music, Rochester, New York. Later he became a professor of violin instruction and music theory and a composer. Daughter, Irene Pyle Millar was an educator of fine arts in the South Bend Schools and numerous civic organizations involved in theatre. Mrs. Millar was educated at St. Mary’s, College, Indiana University, American University of Washington DC, and The Alviene School of Theatre in New York City.
At the time of her death she had three grandchildren, Dan Pyle Millar, Frank E. Millar III, of South Bend and Zoula Pauline Pyle, Des Moines.
