Miss Gertrude Maria Carlson, 85, of Costa Mesa, Calif., a former South Bend resident, died Monday at home. She was a teacher with the South Bend Community School Corp. from 1912 until 1954 when she retired, Miss Carlson was born April 10, 1894, in South Bend and lived here until 1965, when she moved to California.

Surviving are a sister, Mrs. Elsa Hunt of Huntington Beach, Calif.; two nieces, Mrs. Mary Hardy of Edwardsburg, and Mrs. Nancy Lepak of Huntington Beach, and a nephew, Russell, Hunt of Costa Mesa.

Services will be at 2 p.m, Monday at the Welsheimer Funeral Home, 521 N. William, with Rev. Henry Weber, pastor of St. Paul's Memorial I United Methodist Church, officiating. Burial will be in City Cemetery. Friends may call from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.

Miss Carlson was a member of the church, where she was a past president of the Women's Society (now, the United Methodist Women); a member of the National Retired Teachers / Association and the St. Joseph County Teachers Association
