John Cuthbert Shively

Services and burial have taken place in New Orleans, La., for John C. Shively, 56, former St. Joseph County Democratic chairman (1949-1952) who died Sept. 5 in New Orleans after an extended illness.
Mr. Shively had resigned his post as county chairman in 1952 to move to San Antonio, Tex. Several years later he returned to South Bend, moving about 1½ years ago to New Orleans to make his home with a sister, Mrs. Ada Cuthbert, 2222 Dublin St.
A native of Mobile, Ala., he was born Aug. 5, 1909. He graduated in 1927 from Central High School, and in 1931 from the University of Notre Dame. He received his law degree in 1934 from Notre Dame. He was a member of the County Bar Assn. and the Indiana State Bar Assn.
During his more active years In South Bend, he had served as the associate manager of the South Bend Branch of the Indiana Automobile License Bureau. In 1937, he was appointed a special investigator for the county prosecutor's office under George N. Beamer. He also was a law partner of Granville P. Ziegler, South Bend postmaster.
Other survivors include two sons and a daughter.
